WW1: OTHER STORIES

This post will provide information on topics, all with a connection to Evenwood, Ramshaw and district. On occasions there will be stories associated with other neighbouring villages which may be of interest.

FATHER J.F. KRAJICEK AND THE BELGIAN REFUGEES – One such topic is the Belgian Refugees of Witton Park. For about a year, from October 1914 to October 1916, Witton Park was the home to Belgian refugees.  In August 1914, they fled from the village of Aarschot, north of Brussels, in the face of German atrocities and eventually 170 settled in Witton Park.  Father J.F. Krajicek, the RC priest for Witton Park, was responsible for finding them homes in County Durham.  After about a year and a half, most moved onto Elisabethville, near Birtley, to work in the munitions factory where they lived in purpose-built housing.
