George W. RAINE 1916 – 1945

Family Details

George W Raine was born 14 December 1916,[2] the son of Thomas and Wilhelmina Raine who lived at Evenwood Gate.  Thomas died c.1921.[3]  Wilhelmina married to Robert Wass in 1926.[4]  Their daughter Ruby was born April 1927.  In 1939, the family lived at Evenwood Gate, where Robert worked as a general labourer, brickworks and George was employed as a Motor lorry driver.[5] The family later lived at Victoria Street, Evenwood.

The service details of Driver G.W. Raine has not been researched.

The circumstances of Driver George Raine’s death remain unknown but it is believed that in 1942 while serving in North Africa, Thomas suffered serious wounds whilst clearing away debris.  He spent some time in hospital in South Africa before returning home, eventually succumbing to his injuries.[6]  Driver George W. Raine died 28 December 1945.

2007827 Driver G.W. Raine is buries at grave reference N/C Row 12 Grave 39, Evenwood Cemetery.  His headstone bears the following words: [7]
