The Club and Institute Union was founded in 1862 by the Rev. Henry Solly. The CIU as a national body is non-political but individual clubs can be affiliated to political parties. Until 2004, the CIU had its own beer brewed by the Federation Brewery in Dunston, near Gateshead. It was taken over by Scottish & Newcastle Breweries.
EVENWOOD WMC
Evenwood Workmen’s Club (WMC) was established in 1905. In 1914, the Club steward was Robert Mason and the Secretary was Mathew Bowman.
The photo below is believed to be pre-1914 and shows the Club Committee. The late Russell Place allowed us to copy it. The chap on the far right, pointing , was his either his father or grandfather (my memory fails me!)

Below, the WMC & the Bay Horse public house.

The photo below is a later photo which shows a side extension (to the left of the photo), a first floor extension with first floor bay windows added above the ground floor.

Photo below, possibly 1920’s.

BELOW: DATE, early 1960’s?: PHOTO SHOWING THE CLUB AND THE LARGE EXTENSION AT THE BACK TO PROVIDE THE CONCERT ROOM.

Below, a later photo to show the extension into the property to the left.
