
1939 September 3rd
Britain was at war with Germany again. Marshal Foch’s statement which predicted another war within 20 years was correct. This conflict would be truly a world war with Japan entering the war on the side of Germany. It would last until 1945, ending in Europe in May and in the Far East in August.
Evenwood including Evenwood Gate, Ramshaw and Lands lost 20 men who are commemorated on the war memorial. Another 4 men with connections to Evenwood have been included on the new war memorial at Newholme Crescent.
There are 5 burials in Evenwood cemetery, 4 have Commonwealth War Grave Commission headstones and 1 is private. Only 1 of these CWGC burials is commemorated on the War Memorial.

T/50778, Private Joseph Henry Goldstraw, 8 Reserve M.T. Coy, Royal Army Service Corps who died between 29 May and 2 June 1940, aged 27. The son of Daniel and Lucy Goldstraw of Chester-le-Street and husband of Doris Goldstraw of Evenwood, Co. Durham. Remembered with honour Dunkirk Memorial
2658528 Guardsman John Edward Huntington, 1st Battalion, the Coldstream Guards who died 16 May 1940 aged 20. The son of John and M.H. Huntington of Evenwood. Remembered with honour Wilsele Churchyard. Guardsman J.E. Huntington is commemorated on the West Auckland War Memorial.
