Summary
This account provides a selected list of some interesting commercial enterprises then operating in the Evenwood and Barony area. The names of established land owners and entrepreneurs are evident – John Bowes Esq., the Duke of Cleveland, Sir George Musgrave and the Stockton & Darlington Railway Co. together with a new body of men and companies such as Lancelot P. Booth, the Northern Mining Coal Company, Henry Stobart & Co., and local businessmen such as John Vart, Robert Summerson and Wade Emmerson.
Coal Mining Interests
The names of established land owners are evident, for instance John Bowes Esq., the Duke of Cleveland, Sir George Musgrave and the Stockton and Darlington Railway Company owned land across the Parish and property such as Lands Mill. The coal mining companies which had been established over the last 30 years or so, had several interests:
- Lancelot P. Booth & Co. had several interests: – land at Ramshaw on land owned by John Bowes Esq, land and houses at the Oaks, Evenwood totalling 53 properties (in 4 separate listings) & Old Norwood Colliery on land owned by John Bowes Esq.
- Northern Coal Mining Company had interests including Storey Lodge Colliery on land owned by John Bowes Esq.
- Henry Stobart Esq & Co had several interests – Land and houses at Sloshes on land owned by Sir George Musgrave Bart., land and house at Etherley Calf Lane on land owned by Pierce Esq., Lands Colliery on land owned by Pierce Esq., Land and house at Toft Hill, Land and houses at Lands, land and houses at Cross Lanes and Butterknowle on land owned by Miss Dixon.
Local entrepreneurs are listed, such as:
- Robert Summerson had several interestes – Crag Wood quarry on land owned by John Bowes Esq., Storey Lodge Coke Ovens on land occupied by the Northern Coal Mining Company and Norwood Coke Ovens on land owned by John Bowes Esq.
- Mathew Rutter – Carterthorne Colliery on land owned by John Bowes Esq
- James Anderson – Nettlebed Colliery on land owned by the Duke of Cleveland
The above infers that the new enterprise at Evenwood Colliery, as named on the 1st edition OS sheet published in 1859, was not operational in 1851. The colliery houses for the pitmen had been built at the Oaks (spelt Oakes in the Rates Book) and they were occupied. It seems likely that these pitmen worked at the various drifts and mines associated with the Old Norwood Colliery, the Norwood Coke Ovens and the Evenwood Colliery which was located to the east at Thrushwood. Lands Colliery was worked by Henry Stobart & Co. and Storey Lodge was worked by the Northern Coal Mining Company. Robert Summerson had interests in quarrying and and coke ovens.
